I’ve been fortunate enough, at 26, to have bought and sold a business, and then taken another business from zero to $10M in cash collected in under three years. I got here through a shit ton of hard work, networking, learning, and time.
What people on Instagram and social media don’t tell you is how much work it takes to run a successful business. The average person thinks a service-business owner doing a “measly” $1M a year is rich — and that’s just not the case.
I’ve worked with and spoken to thousands of business owners over the last few years, and the biggest thing I notice is this: the top performers know their numbers, and they know what it takes to grow and delegate.
A lot of people online get sold a dream by some BS guru and end up getting lied to. Because at the end of the day, a service business doing only $1M a year in top-line revenue — the owner is lucky to take home at least $200,000.
Honestly, some of these guys would be better off working a job, putting in 40 hours a week, than running a business.
The issue with society today is that so many people are caught up in what others are doing or saying online, and they have no idea what these people are actually like in real life. That “guru” trying to sell you a course on how to start a house cleaning business has most likely never even scaled one. That “guru” telling you to get an SBA loan, buy a “boring business,” and gain financial freedom is also full of it.
How do I know this?
I’ve met both archetypes.
The house cleaning guru selling a course on how to run a cleaning business makes way more doing that than he ever would operating one — and he’ll send his “students” to me for marketing services and collect a referral fee on the backend. That’s how the business world works: you give to get, and you build strategic partnerships to move forward.
But the house cleaning guru isn’t even the worst one.
The worst is the guru telling you to go take out an SBA loan to buy a business. I’ve seen two people go bankrupt in the last year because of this.
One of them has actually become a good friend of mine. He went out and got an SBA loan to buy a roofing franchise because he thought it would be his escape route from corporate America — and the opposite happened. Two and a half years later, he’s $300,000 in debt and now searching for a job just to pay it off.
Two years ago, he was making $150,000 a year in corporate America.
But he got sold a dream by an online guru — and got absolutely dunked on by the SBA and his franchise.
As a mature as a business man the more i realize that NOT EVERYONE should be a business owner and A LOT of people do not realize the pressure and work you need put in every single day to actually build and grow a cash flowing business.
Whoever gives you advice in business and LIFE make sure that they have achieved the goal you are going after.
The worst people to take advice from are the ones who have never done what you are TRYING to achieve in life/business.
A whole lot of bullshitters out there been seeing people get dunked on more then ever this year.
Thank you for reading my rant.
